Academic teaching qualifications

What is this data entry capturing?

In England the HE sector has been asked by Government to improve the quality of information available to students about the teaching expertise of their teaching staff at all levels.

This data entry records whether or not academic staff hold a higher education teaching qualification, another relevant teaching qualification, or have been recognised in other ways for their teaching expertise.

This information is returned to HESA and full details of the HESA requirements can be found on the HESA data collection page.

Who needs to enter this information?

All departments and all staff on permanent, fixed-term or open ended contracts in staff classification category 1 Teaching only or 3 Teaching and Research, see Staff Classification Guide (PDF)

Options in Core Personnel

It is important that what is returned in this field is up to date, to reflect any qualification changes while an employee is in their current post.

There is no implied hierarchy in the valid entries, neither is there any implied equivalence.

Only qualifications for teaching in higher education should be returned, other qualifications are not considered to be a teaching qualification.

Only one of the codes applicable to Higher Education Authority Fellowships (02, 03, 04 or 05) can apply at a given point in time. Ensure the latest on is selected and remove older ones.

Where a staff member attends an accredited course that leads to an award, but has not gone forward for the accreditation, they should be treated as having successfully completed the course and coded as 01.
